Description

Product Description

The bestselling Scaffolding Language, Scaffolding Learning helped tens of thousands of mainstream elementary teachers ensure that their English language learners became full members of the school community with the language and content skills they needed for success. In the highly anticipated Second Edition, Pauline Gibbons updates her classic text with a multitude of practical ideas for the classroom, supported by the latest research in the field of ELL/ESL.

With clear directions and classroom tested strategies for supporting students'' academic progress, Gibbons shows how the teaching of language can be integrated seamlessly with the teaching of content, and how academic achievement can be boosted without sacrificing our own vision of education to the dictates of knee-jerk accountability. Rich examples of classroom discourse illustrate exactly how the scaffolding process works, while activities to facilitate conversation and higher-level thinking put the latest research on second language learning into action.

About the Author

Pauline Gibbons taught postgraduate and undergraduate TESOL courses at the University of Technology, Sydney, for many years, and is now an Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales, Sydney. She has published extensively in EL education, including Bridging Discourses in the ESL Classroom: students, teachers and researchers (Continuum, 2006), and two other Heinemann books: Learning to Learn in a Second Language (1993) and English Learners, Academic Literacy and Thinking: Learning in the Challenge Zone (2009).

Must read for ALL teachers
Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2018
If every educator in the US read this and applied the techniques and strategies and really took this to heart, we would revolutionize education. This is as good a text for teachers without ESL/ELL learners as it is for those who have such students.

A helpful and practical text.

Helpful book with practical strategies. Very straightforward and easy to read. This was assigned for a class I took, and it is probably a book I am most likely to refer to after the class is over than any other text I have used recently.

Gibbons does a good job of balancing theory and practice in this book. Although some of the practice can be applied at middle school level, the book is most useful to elemntary teachers. The 6 period day common at the secondary level does not lend itself to the integrated curriculum that Gibbons recommends. This is still a good read for ESL teachers of all levels. It is a book an elementary ESL teacher or ESL coordinator should read in order to set up a good ESL program at the elementary school level.

This book makes a strong case for the integration of language and content learning, with a focus on research-proven contexts and strategies that help ensure success for all students. It provides multiple examples of authentic "classroom talk" such as teacher-guided reporting, student "rehearsal for reporting", and a teacher talking with children explicitly about how to work together collaboratively. It also includes activities for developing all aspects of language learning, demonstrating how these can be meaningfully integrated with subject knowledge as part of a holistic curriculum. Particularly useful is the chapter on learning to write in a second language and culture, which describes some common school genres in terms of their purpose, organization, structure (connectives) and other language features (such as tense and specific vocabulary). The chapter also provides a question framework for assessing writing which can be used to assess individual student''s writing, build up a class profile, or adapted for self-assessment purposes. The final chapter is dedicated to developing integrated units and provides guidance on "finding the language in the content" so as to make language-learning explicit across the curriculum. Suggestions for further reading are listed at the end of each chapter.

Excellent book. Thought provoking with practical approach to EAL. I read this 16 years ago as a student reader and it shaped my approach to teaching English. Has been helpful to return to this book after a career break.
